News Paper Article on Falster Farm

"Classic and Miniature sized Herefords raised on grass (alone) have the longest life span and reproductive success. The rumen health and stress free activities of these cows seem to dictate this longevity.

Show cattle are generally forced to size and flesh by feeding them rations of highly acid and salt laden grain(s) coupled with or supplemented by a fiber filler such as hay for roughage. Frankly this unnatural husbandry often promulgates numerous rumen and reproductive suppressors (problems) over time. A cow that was reared on grain will seldom ever be able to flourish on grass alone, the rumens are just "shot". KEF

We also raise pastured pork and poultry. We raise good things to eat in small packages.

Karl & Nancy Falster have been involved with the Organic Garden-ing Movement since 1970. They credit their all natural farming methods for his health and Nancy's cooking for their vigor strength to farm.

Nancy Gail Falster is a profes-sional chef and culinary educator in Nourishing Traditions. She is an accomplished mother and house-wife. Together their motto is: In God We Trust. more . . .

Falster Farm is not a Factory Farm, we are a local all-natural bio-dynamic family farm and cattle ranch in East Texas. Ever wonder what a Factory Farm is like? We encourage everyone to consider this short movie.

John Wayne and the "Old Breed"

Falster Farm are breeders of the "Old Breed" of Hereford Cows . . . today called Miniature (Mini) Hereford Cows.

As time progresses things change. Not all change is for the better. There was a time in these United States when agricultural folks were told to believe the government's teachings that breeding larger cows to produce even more beef and milk was something they should strive for.

Over the years and by practical observation, we have learned the problem with such a strategy. Larger cows consume more resources which includes food, water and space. They produce more waste; consider today's confinement "factory farms". For the average small farm, today's "standard size" cows, well, they just aren't a good fit. And frankly with the resources necessary for the super sized animals the profit margin is down so low; and in our opinion; the beef taste is flat.

Thus the search for the kinds of cows our forefathers depended on for rich milk, good food, good health, and cash money. What would it take to go "back to the future" in raising animals that are fit to eat and fit the farm and the reestablishment of the local farm market? Scientific research conducted at Texas A&M indicates that two Mini Hereford cows will consume less resources than the so-called standard cow AND produce upwards to 20% more delicious beef for your family, naturally marbled on non-carcinogenic pasture (grass.)

So how does Big John fit into this? Mini Herefords look just like the white faced cows you saw in the Western Movies of the 1950's. The great taste of beef is really in that cow - our Falster Farm cows. If you want a pet, our cows are good for that too! But our objective is to make cattle farming fun and profitable for our customers. Come see and meat, excuse me, meet the "Old Breed" of Cattle: Falster Miniature Hereford Cattle.                                                                            Top of Page
